«Эффект “Рози”» — продолжение первой книги Грэма Симсиона «Проект “Рози”». Грэм Симсион — австралийский IT-специалист, которому его первая книга «Проект “Рози”» принёсла мировую славу. Книгу об успешном профессоре-генетике Доне Тиллмане с синдромом Аспергера, который отбирает претенденток на роль жены при помощи анкеты, суммарно продали тиражом более миллиона экземпляров. Для сравнения средний тираж одной книги в России в 2012 году — 4624 экземпляра. Это смешная, добрая и трогательная книга, которая кончается хэппи-эндом, то есть свадьбой Дона и Рози. Что же для нас подготовил автор во второй части?
Когда я думала, что писать об этой книге, меня раздирали противоречивые чувства. Но для начала — сюжет. После свадьбы Дон и Рози переехали из Австралии в Нью-Йорк, и оба заняты интеллектуальной деятельностью — Дон всё так же преподает, Рози учится на психолога. Его лучший друг Джин, тоже профессор, но в области психологии, приезжает к ним погостить на неопределенный срок. И одновременно с этим Рози объявляет шокирующую новость — она беременна. На Дона сваливается куча проблем, которые надо решить максимально быстро: найти новую квартиру, где хватило бы всем места; изучить гинекологию и процесс родов; составить новую систему закупок еды и не попасть в тюрьму.
Перед прочтением я видела негативные отзывы на книгу, но решила не поддаваться и читать максимально непредвзято. Тем не менее с сожалением признаю — вторая часть почти в два раза больше первой, но совсем не в два раза лучше, а скорее наоборот. У меня возникло впечатление, что Симсион не планировал продолжение при создании первой книги. «Эффект» читается как отдельная книга. Если бы ее продавали как не связанную с первой и, скажем, с другими персонажами, она была бы неплоха. Но она все-таки продолжает повествование первой книги. Поэтому возникает ряд вопросов. Для начала самый важный — это преображение Рози. В первой книге она веселая, легкая на подъем, сглаживала странности Дона. Во второй она намеренно (!) пренебрегает средствами предохранения и беременеет, не ставя Дона в известность. А сообщая новость, сообщает её как данность под лозунгом «Моё тело — моё дело». С этим сложно спорить, если бы они не были женаты и отдельно не оговорили, что сейчас им рано заводить детей. Помимо этого, когда Дон старается максимально всё спланировать, готовить полезную для беременных еду и т.п., Рози одёргивает его и говорит, что он её подавляет и ей нужно больше личного пространства. Это второй пункт — выходя замуж за Дона в первой части, она понимала, кто он и каковы его недостатки, и говорила, что любит его. Сейчас же внезапно её стали раздражать его самые типичные черты. Ничем, кроме как необходимостью создать конфликт в книге, я это объяснить не могу. Что приводит нас к третьему пункту — это отсутствие сюжета.
По сути вся книга — это описанные выше конфликты Рози и Дона по разным поводам. Общей нити повествования нет. Финал — типичное клише. Дон спешно едет в аэропорт, чтобы убедить Рози (не пишу в чём убедить, поскольку это спойлер). Более типичную ситкомовскую концовку сложно придумать.
Но, как я написала во вступлении, у меня противоречивые чувства. Дон всё такой же милый, забавные ситуации всё так же абсурдны и читается книга так же легко, как первая. Местами я всплакнула, местами хохотала. За это можно простить многое, но не всё. Надеюсь, что третьей части всё-таки не будет. Но если вы читали первую, или собираетесь, «Эффект “Рози”» упускать не стоит. Пока что книга есть только на английском.

“The Rosie Effect” by Graeme Simsion continues his first book, “The Rosie Project”, which turned out to be a great success. The story about an Australian genetics professor Don Tillman with Asperger’s syndrome, who is looking for a wife (“the wife project”) and testing the candidates with his meticulously planned questionnaire, won the hearts of millions of people around the world. But Simsion didn’t plan to stop at it and wrote the second book, which holds a great surprise for the readers.
I must admit, writing the review about “The Rosie Effect” was uncharacteristically hard for me. Actually, writing any review is hard. But this specific review presented me with a challenge “how to write about a book you love and hate at the same time”. After “The Rosie Project” the expectations were set high and I suppose it is hard for a new fiction writer to hold the same high standard he set with his first book. It really pains me to write this about the second book, but I think Simsion should have stopped at the first one. At the same time, if he did, we wouldn’t have the chance to witness so many funny stories with Don, as the second book presents. So, enough with this divided personality talk, let’s start with the plot.
At this point, those who haven’t yet read the first book, should stop because of the spoilers. It is practically impossible to review a second book in series without dropping spoilers about the first. So please, avert your eyes from this page and proceed to any book store to purchase “The Rosie Project”.
After Don and Rosie got married, they moved to New York. Don is teaching at the university and Rosie is studying to receive a diploma in psychology. Don’t best friend Gene, who got divorced, has nowhere to live and Don invites him to New York to live with them. Almost at the same time, Rosie announces she is pregnant, to Don’s great astonishment. Don has to solve several problems: to find a new apartment, which is spacious enough for all of them; to study and excel at gynaecology and obstetrics; to plan the whole new, Standardised Meal System (pregnancy version); to stay out of jail.
Before I started reading the second book, I saw many negative reviews, but I tried not to give in and to read it without any prejudice. Nevertheless, I have to admit: the second book is twice longer, but not twice better, on contrary. I had the impression that Simsion hadn’t planned writing the second book at all. “The Rosie Effect” could be read as a totally separate book, if you changed the names. Still, it continues the narrative, which raises some questions.
First is the Rosie transformation. In the first book she is funny, lovely, she understood Don’s weirdness and social impracticality. In the second book, she gets pregnant intentionally, without informing Don. She announces it, telling Don that her body is her business. That is hard to object to, but they are married and specifically discussed recently that it is too early for them to have children and they both wanted to wait. After that Don, in good spirits, tries to control everything and to help Rosie with anything, but she just gets colder and grows irritated with his help. I am getting to my second point: marrying Don, Rosie understood and accepted all his quirks (undiagnosed Asperger’s syndrome). Now, all of a sudden, she finds them inappropriate (as if he can change just at his wish). I can’t find any explanation for all of this other than that the author needed a conflict in his book. Which takes us to my third point.
There’s virtually no plot. They move to the USA, they work and study, okay, but there’s no connected events, that could show us that Simsion, had, in fact, planned the story. All book is a mere description of how exactly did Rosie got angry at Don. The book ends with so cliched sit-com finale that it actually made my cry aloud (not because I was touched by it) and rise my fist up in frustration.
But as I said in the beginning, I have mixed feelings about the book. Despite Rosie’s sudden transformation, Don stays the same. He is funny, he is nice, he gets into trouble. He made me laugh, he made me cry. It makes up to a lot, but not to all. I strongly hope Simsion will abstain from writing the third book. But if you have loved the first one, you probably should pick up and read the second. Just don’t set your hopes too high.
